Transfer Preparation Requirements — International Development Studies*

Major Preparation Requirements

Required - minimum of six courses from

  • One course in introduction to international development studies.
  • One economics course (economic geography, microeconomics or macroeconomics)
  • One statistics course
  • Two years of a modern foreign language

Three courses from the following

  • Sociocultural anthropology
  • Cultural or regional geography
  • Introduction to globalization
  • Introduction to international and area studies
  • Contemporary history/civilization/culture of a developing region of the world
  • Comparative or world politics
  • Introduction to sociology
  • Introductory gender studies

Note: No more than one semester of foreign language may be used toward the minimum six major preparation courses required. High school language of instruction is NOT acceptable to meet admission requirements but may be used to satisfy the departmental foreign language requirement after matriculation. A supplemental application must be submitted during the fall term to which you were admitted.

* Demand for this major significantly exceeds space available.

* Students are classified as Pre-International Development Studies until they complete the preparation courses at UCLA.
