All students are required to be enrolled in a qualified health insurance plan in order to register at UCLA. Additionally, undergraduates are automatically enrolled in the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless they waive the coverage.
The cost of coverage through UC SHIP will be included as part of your Student Services Fees. You will receive more information about UC SHIP with your first BruinBill.
If you already have health insurance, check if your current plan meets the university requirements by visiting the student health insurance website. If your plan does meet the requirements, then you can complete an online waiver so that you will not be enrolled in UC SHIP. A UC SHIP waiver must be completed every academic year. For example, if the student has a qualifying insurance plan and successfully waives UC SHIP in the fall, the waiver will be honored for the entire academic year. Once waived in fall there are no further actions needed until the next academic year.
All UCLA students have access to Ashe Center services (regardless of what insurance plan they have) but small fees apply for services rendered. BruinCare is a program that gives students who have waived UC SHIP prepaid access to certain services at The Ashe Center.
U See LA Optometry is an extension of the Ashe Center and it is located in the Ackerman Union. Services include comprehensive eye exams, as well as a selection of 700+ eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.
